This settlement was founded by Germans in 1834. The name Cat Spring was chosen when settlers were camping near a clear, never-failing spring. A young man saw a wildcat drinking from the spring and gave the area the name “Katzenquelle” (Cat Spring). A 160 years later, very little of the old settlement remains. In 1895 when the railroad came through, the original town was moved three miles to a new location. At that time the town supported a 2-story hotel and became the hub of cattle ranching. Rumor has it that the town began to decline when the banker ran off with the town’s money (and his secretary). The town today supports a few quaint restaurants and a tiny post office where the postmaster will bring out the mail when one rides in on horseback. Cat Spring is also home to the state’s oldest County Agricultural Society and the starting point of the historic Salt Grass Trailride.
